KB957912 - Update for Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Debugging and Breakpoints

I've installed the hotfix and I still get the problem that if I hit a breakpoint and try to step through my code it acts like I've hit f5. This is making it absolutely impossible to debug my code. I'm using C#, a windows forms app with dll's. Each dll is a separate project within my solution. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a CLEAN install of VS 2008 Team Edition for Developers on Vista 64-bit. I installed VS SP1; no problem.

I attempted to install this hot-fix to address debugging issues w/ IE8 and other oddities, at the advise of a MS employee on a bulletin board. I can NOT install this patch. Similar results with hotfix Kb967631. Here's the install log summary.

everything in the install ran cleanly up until this point:

Guys,

I put the following statement which turns off caching, at the beginning of Page_Load() in my code behind, then the breakpoint problem is resolved for me. VS 2008 breaks at the set breakpoint now. Everything worked fine for me including the data-rebinding for the just-updated-and-reopened-for-edit record.

Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.NoCache);

Hope this works for some of you too.

Yes, the breakpoint issue and the data-re-binding issue are exclusively noticed by me in Vista Business Sp1, Dual Core system, IE 8 with hotfixes KB957912 and KB967631, ASP .NET/C# Web application. Same application with IE7 binded the data good on IE8 on XP/SP3, Single Core processor, worked correctly as I saw.

MystCreater and Phalguna, are you saying that installing the hotfix did not address your breakpoint issues like Adam O.? I ran the install and everything worked fine afterwards. I was only having the issue with Windows Forms projects in C#. My ASP.Net projects in VB.Net worked fined. Phalguna are you saying the problem re-appeared after installing IE 8? I haven't installed it yet now I wonder if I want to.

Finally!!!, I identified the problem for my above mentioned breakpoint issue - not stopping at times at the set breakpoint.

It is the IE8 that is the culprit here, as I found. When my default browser is set to IE8, THE BREAKPOINT DOES NOT HIT and also does not bind updated data on the page!. IE7 works well, as well Firefox breaks at the set breakpoint and binds the data correctly.

I am not an expert on the subject, but this what I noticed. Hope this helps few others.

Hi All,

I have similar problem which is consistent. My code is in C#.

Environment:
I have a Dell D830 Centrino Duo; Vista Business x86; VS 2008 Sp1, .NET Framework 3.5 Sp1; and applied the hotfixes KB957912 and KB967631.
My application is in ASP .NET and C#.

Problem:
The Breakpoint which is set in the detailed page hits for the first time opening of the detailed page from a GridView row, but does NOT hit upon reopening the same record after the record is updated. Also, it does not bind the updated element values (only), when they are really updated in the database. Upon hit of a refresh button which discards unupdated values on the page and re-binds the data on the detailed form, only then the breakpoint hits. The breakpoint is set in the PageLoad. I tried to see why the data is not bound to the elements, but the breakpoint does not hit!

I tried setting the Processor Afinity to one CPU1, but in vain.

This problem is consistent, and I can reproduce all times. Also, can provide any further details.

Can anyone help me, please!

Hi Adam,

I have experienced exactly the same problem of you; when I debug my applications and use step through or step into specific, suddently Visual Studio just continues execute as if I had pressed F5.

I have talked with other persons but none of them have experienced this problem BUT these persons use C# and I use Visual Basic. This is the only thing that I think can be the problem.

1) Which version of Visual Studio are you using?
2) What kind of code are you debugging (native C++, C#) when you are hitting this issue?
3) Is this 32 or 64 bit code?
4) Do you have a set of steps you can follow to reproduce the issue?

Important Update:

I was incorrect, the SP1 I noticed on the 'About, screen was referring to the .NET framework version.

I then installed SP1, and was then able to install this patch.

I then encountered another debugging issue:

When debugging javascript, the incorrect line is highlighted.

I believe this may have been because I am generating controls dynamically in my aspx.vb code.

I moved my JavaScript out of my aspx page and into a separate js file using:

<script type="text/javascript" src="myJScript.js"> </script>

My issues are now all resolved, javascript debugging is working like a dream.

I receive message :
"None of the products that are addressed by this software update are installed on this computer. Click Cancel to exit setup."

But I do I have Visual Studio 2008 SP1 installed?

My debug problem:

My breakpoints are hit in 'some' of my javvascript but not all:

eg if I call function on body onload :
< body onload="javascript:MyFunction()" - if I set a breakpoint in MyFunction(), then yes it will debug just fine.

But then after the page has loaded, I call another function via a radiobutton onclick:
I call javvascript from dynamically built radio buttons :

Dim radWhatever As RadioButton
radWhatever.Attributes("onclick") = "javascript:myOtherFunction();"

A breakpoint in 'myOtherFunction()' will never be hit.

I find this very frustrating, it is costing me days & days of effort.

This patch does not work. I'm disappointed that this breakpoint problem in VS2008 has been lingering for months and yet Microsoft has not come to a solution. I worry if this issue has gotten any attention at all.

This is completely useless, I cannot debug my code and step through randomly just continues execution as if I had pressed F5. What a nightmare, I cannot even run my solution without SP1 installed now because of an issue with some design package not being loaded.

The fix DOES NOT WORK, and nothing has been done about this?

This needs to get sorted ASAP, I am trying to develop an enterprise application and not being able to debug my code is not an option.

I have the same problem with Visual Basic, VS 2008 SP1 + KB957912 an Pentium 4HT or Athlon X2 3600+

A class is initialized before it should be initialized. The constructor is called by mscorlib.dll (as show the call stack).

No breakpoints works on the constructor.
A new thread is created meanwhile calling the constructor, but there is no code that should create a thread for the class.
