Disabling Edit Links on Sharepoint Online

How can I disable the ability to create Edit Links for documents hosted on the Knowledge Bank in Sharepoint Online? Knowledge lawyers (KLL's) create links to files and send them to relevant parties, resulting in "normal" users being able to edit knowledge assets they should not be allowed to. This will need to be catered for in the Browse Interface and Document Preview.
How can existing Edit Links be converted to Read Only links?

Is there out-of-the-box functionality to prevent users from creating Edit Links directly? if not, can someone elaborate on suitable workarounds?

    Hi @Vusi Gumede,

With OOTB settings, we can set

    • the permission that's selected by default for sharing links to "Can view"
    • links can only give "Can view" permissions for Anyone links User's image

via SharePoint admin center >> Policies >> Sharing.

After setting this, "Can edit" option will be not available for anyone links.

    User's image

For other "Share the link with" options, "Can edit" option is still available but the default sharing setting will be "Can view". This would prevent users who share document links set the links to "Can edit".
