This sample shows how to access files and folders by letting the user choose them through the file pickers and how to save a file so that the user can specify the name, file type, and location of a file to save. This sample uses Windows.Storage.Picke...

  • Only focus on WP 8.1 app

    • How do I use SuspensionManager and ContinuationManager helper class on WP 8.1 Silverlight project (not universal app). Because these name spaces Windows.UI.Xaml and Windows.UI.Xaml.Controls are only available for Windows 8 store app.

    • I get this error when executing
I created a new application using a universal template windows store application.
I would like to replicate the scenario 2, to list any file from the location Documents, but when you run the above mentioned line throw an UnauthorizedAccessException(Access is denied. Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005).
In example the manifiest has not been modified, or so it seems.
In my example I implement the interface IFileOpenPickerContinuable, extracting file that contains it, and creating a file with the same name on my project.
I do not understand what is escaping me.
      What am I doing wrong?
  • Universal?

    • There is nothing "universal" about this sample. Shared code is close to none.
Why are you putting lipstick on the pig???

    • The only issue I have with this is it doesnt include a source file that can be saved in the sample. So I cant see how to code the source of my file.

    • (from:
"The SuspensionManager class simplifies lifecycle management for your app. To get the SuspensionManager class, create a new Windows Phone 8.1 project that uses a project template other than the Blank App template.". Why?
  • Not working anymore in 8.1

    • Used to work fine under 8.0. Now, with 8.1, when PickSingleFileAsync is called, or any file related Async method is called, I get the exception:
A first chance exception of type 'System.ArgumentException' occurred in mscorlib.dll
Additional information: Value does not fall within the expected range.
Anything concerning library access through code seems to be broken on a fresh 8.1 installation. I checked the permissions, nothing wrong there. The only thing I could think of is that I remapped the libraries to another partition, which I always do and also did on 8.0 (system and data on 2 different partitions). I did it the recommended way: right click, properties, location... on fully accessible partitions and folders.
8.1 new dlls broke something. I can't get this sample or my application to work anymore.
      Anyone experimenting this too?
    • Update. I reinstalled 8.1 from scratch, again fresh installation. The only difference this time is that I did not change the default libraries locations. My app and this sample finally worked. 8.1 doesn't handle well changing the location of the libraries even if Explorer's interface allows you to do so. Actually, my favorites were even saved in 2 different locations depending on the context and many weird issues arose related to libraries locations. This will cause major problems to my configuration and most users and must be addressed before the final release to avoid a major disaster.
    • I'm having the very same exception throwing when usinge FilePicker.PickFileAsync. Fresh Win 8.1 VS 2013 installation, Win8 Store app (not 8.1). However I did not change anything win8 library related.
Can't figure out where the problem is, and I think the win8 store app uses its normal win8 dll's, so they seem not to be compatible with win8.1, no expert on that though...

    • App crashes using "Scenario4.xaml.vb" line 44
      "Dim file As StorageFile = Await savePicker.PickSaveFileAsync" - "E_ACCESSDENIED"
Maby some capabilities are misson from the project?
    • I met the same problem with the 2nd scenario... after spending 4 hour on this problem, I finally reversed the words "private" and "async" of the function "private async void PickFilesButton_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)" and it works like a charm.
